Sunday
1st April: Worksop Town 5 - 2 Welton
Without being able to quite put your finger on it, the team are just not
playing as well as they were a few weeks ago. It is not down to effort,
but it is just not quite happening for the boys who have made real progress
during their first season in the highest league.
Having beaten Worksop ten-six only a few weeks ago, much was expected
from the trip.
Technically Worksop are a very able team with a number of good finishers
and having raced into a five nil lead the way back for Welton was always
going to be long and difficult.
Man of the Match Callum Parkin gave Welton some hope with two pieces of
excellent skill, twice scoring direct from corners which is fast becoming
a trademark of his and Welton went into half time 5 - 2 behind.
The second half saw an improved performance from all the Welton boys and
with Tom Gardiner in goal making a number of excellent saves, Worksop
were unable to add to their half time tally.
Unfortunately despite good performances from Jacob Morley, Allister Bush
and Thomas Crowther, who gave his all in an attempt to reduce the arrears,
the half time score of 5 - 2 turned out to be the final result.
Sunday 18th
March: Kirton Town Colts 4 - 1 Welton
After a run of good results and performances in recent weeks, Welton Under
10 As came down to earth with a bang on Sunday.
This was always going to be a difficult away fixture against a good footballing
side in Kirton, who have been near the top of the league all season. Matters
were made worse by a terrible journey to Boston that saw most of the squad
arriving only fifteen minutes before kick off.
However that would be to do an injustice to Kirton, who on the day were
the better side and for the majority of the game apparently more up for
the challenge in very testing playing conditions.
There were a number of bright moments that suggested on another day the
score could well be much closer than the four-one outcome on this occasion.
Thomas Crowther made a number of positive runs down the left hand side
and was rewarded in the second half with an assured finish following a
good team move. Captain Euan Morris worked hard with several of his trade
mark driving runs and shots, coming close on a couple of occasions. Callum
Parkin came close with two excellent long range efforts, one in each half,
each one producing a fine save from the Kirton goalkeeper.
Tom Gardener in goal produced a number of fine saves to keep the Kirton
total to four, and Mr Consistent himself, Jacob Morley produced a number
of important and timely tackles in defence that earned him the man of
the match award.
The Welton boys were quite rightly disappointed in the result and their
performance, although one or two of the comments after the game suggested
a determination to put matters right in the coming weeks...watch out!!!
Sunday 4th
March: Louth Old Boys 6 - 5 Welton
In writing the reports, I feel like I am repeating myself week on week.
However, without doubt week on week the Welton Under 10As continue to
show impovement.
It is only three months since a very good Louth Old Boys side comprehensively
beat Welton six one.
However from the moment early on, that man of the match Euen Morris put
Welton 1-0 in front there was never likely to be a repeat of the previously
imbalanced score and more especially, performance.
It was another game played on a difficult surface with the added pleasure
of wind and rain. I am sure the parents, if not the children look forward
with anticipation to warmth and sun in coming weeks.
The ultimate outcome was a 6-5 defeat for Welton and whilst the result
was disappointing, the performance was pleasing with good contributions
from the whole squad.
Tom Gardener in goal had an excellent second half making a number of fine
saves. In Jacob Morley, Alistair Bush and in the second half Mitchell
Peachey, the defence all gave everything in an attempt to stop a very
capable Louth strike force.
In midfield, Thomas Crowther and Euan Morris both produced excellent combative
performances, the latter adding 4 goals to his increasing tally for the
season. Callum Parkin also worked hard on what is not his best surface,
his corners once again proving a real menace and James Fussey coming on
at half time made a solid contribution with some good passing and timely
tackles.
Up front, Joe Hunt was on hand in the first half to provide a clinical
finish on the end of a good move and after the break both Aaron Clarke
and Harry Goodwin both helped to ensure Louth were pushed right to the
final whistle.
This is a good group of boys who are all working hard and appear to be
enjoying playing together and everyone involved is looking forward in
anticipation to the remainder of a season.
Sunday 25th
February: Welton 2 - 3 Manor United
Despite ultimately losing this pulsating encounter 3-2, no Welton
player should do anything other than walk away with their heads held very
high. In Manor United they faced a team who had lost only one league game
all season and who had scored many goals along the way.
Without a doubt this Welton team is growing in confidence, but more importantly all have an appetite to learn and desire to be successful both individually but more especially collectively.
No one should be under any illusion, this was a very good Manor team, yet at times Welton played the better football and in the second half were the better team. A draw would probably have been a fairer reflection of the game, a view shared by both sides.
The speed and quality of the football at times for boys of nine and ten was very encouraging and the commitment fantastic.
This commitment is no better displayed than through Man of the Match Jacob Morley who continued a fine run of defensive performances, albeit on a day when any number of the squad could have received the award.
As for the game itself, Welton took the lead mid way through the first half following pressure that resulted in Callum Parkin finishing with a low curling shot from an angle outside of the box.
The game was very competitive with several players winning their personal battles including Allister Bush ably supporting Jacob in defence and Thomas Crowther working tirelessly up and down the left flank.
Manor did equalise, although Welton went into the break two one in front with Euan Morris rounding off a typically energetic half with an excellent strike from outside the area.
The second half continued much the same as the first, although with the wind at their backs, Welton had the upper hand and played some of their best football of the season.
With an extra slice of luck in front of goal the outcome might have been different, yet despite the valiant efforts of Aaron Clarke in goal, Welton could not prevent an equaliser, and with the cruellest of fortune, Manor grabbed a last gasp winner to take the points but certainly not the spirit of a Welton team who should be incredibly proud of themselves.
Sunday 4th
February: Welton 10 - 6 Worksop Town
If ever 60 minutes of football summed up the progress that this group
of boys have made during the season then this was it. Whilst Callum Parkin
walked away with the man of the match trophy, it would be fair to suggest
that you could have chosen from the entire squad of players who today
donned the purple jerseys and represented the club.
The effort, commitment and enthusiasm were matched with a fantastic team
spirit that at the moment is growing week on week, both in matches and
training alike.
The team, both collectively and individually, now appear to have some
self belief as well to their armoury. It is these qualities that have
now taken them to four successive victories, scoring twenty-six goals
in the process.
This was always going to be a difficult encounter with a combination of
challenging and muddy conditions and opposition in the form of Worksop
Town who were immediately above Welton in the league.
The early stages were tight with both sides trying to get the upper hand
and at mid way through the first half with the score at two each it appeared
a very close contest was likely.
However, Welton managed to lift the tempo and went into half time 5-2
in front with two goals from captain Euan Morris, two from James Fussey
and one from Harry Goodwin.
Although there was a growing sense of confidence, this was tempered with
the fact that Worksop were never going to give up and so when Thomas Crowther
scored an early goal in the second half to make the score 6-2 the cheers
were slightly louder than normal.
Both teams worked incredibly hard on a difficult surface and although
football was not always easy the spectators continued to enjoy a goal
feast.
The final outcome was a 10-6 victory for Welton with Euan Morris going
on to complete his hat-trick, and Joe Hunt, sporting new boots, completing
a fine second half hat-trick, although his celebrations might need some
fine tuning in the coming weeks!!
Sunday 28th
January: Welton 6 - 1 Fishtoft
The conditions were always going to play a part in the outcome
of this match. It was critical therefore that when Welton found themselves
playing into a very strong head wind in the first half they applied the
sort of team spirit that had taken them to two successive victories prior
to today.
To go into half time only 1-0 down with a combination of hard work and resolute defending was seen as a good result and promised much for the second half. Special mention should go to Tom Gardner in goal who made a number of important saves.
Welton started brightly in the second half, although they found themselves frustrated by a determined Fishtoft side.
It was Callum Parkin who eventually got Welton on level terms following an excellent corner from Thomas Crowther. It was Thomas who then put Welton in front for the first time in the match, and allowed those watching on the sidelines to breathe slightly easier.
Welton then took control of the game with some strong running and good passing given difficult under foot conditions. Harry Goodwin added two goals in quick succession to make the score 4-1 before Man of the Match Euan Morris completed the scoring and a fantastic personal performance with two excellent finishes to make the final score 6-1 to Welton and extend the winning run to three games.
