to the Welton FC Under 8 Match Reports for 2007/08
Sunday 30th March: Louth 0 - 3 Welton
On a spring like afternoon Welton travelled to Louth for the first time. The penultimate fixture of the season was always going to be tough but with keeper George Hunter unavailable due to illness the challenge at kick off was greater than expected. Aidan Prescott, Janusz Burzynski and Jack Blair all had successful spells in between the posts and it was a great achievement to keep a clean sheet. In the home game at the end of October Louth had frustrated Welton with shrewd tactics but Welton were much more determined today and completed a comfortable victory.
In the first half with the wind helping to push the team forward Welton held the territorial advantage and a greater share of the possession thus creating many good chances. Robson Luther who played superbly again today had the first chance with a driving run and shot. Jonathan Mumby had a header go over the bar after the first of many good Liam Atkinson corners. Atkinson then came close with a low drive. It was good Welton pressure as Louth took a throw that resulted in Atkinson opening the scoring; he won the ball and moved away from a defender before shooting powerfully past the keeper. Goal number two came soon after when Mumby‘s free kick was bundled home by Luther. Adam Bush and Atkinson had further chances before Atkinson made it 3-0, another Luther run and shot was saved by the busy home stopper but when the ball fell to Atkinson he made no mistake.
The half time score was 3-0 and in the second period the team defended well showing great resilience to restrict Louth to isolated breaks. Chad Peachey produced an energetic spell and epitomised all that was good about the team performance. Mumby and Luther both played strongly in defence and midfield to win a joint Man of the match award.
TEAM: Atkinson, Blair, Bush, Burzynski, Crowther, Luther, Mumby, Peachey, Prescott.
GOALSCORERS: Atkinson (2), Luther
MAN OF THE MATCH: Luther / Mumby
Sunday 16th March: Sleaford 3 - 5 Welton
On a very windy and dull afternoon Welton travelled across Lincoln to play close rivals Sleaford. The pitch, facilities and hospitality are excellent and Sleaford have had a fantastic run of results recently but Welton enjoyed one of their best days of the season. This was the third tough game in a row against a team from the top of the league and the boys had to show great character, effort and determination.
This was not the first game this season to be wind influenced and it was as great toss for Robson Luther to win. Using the wind in our favour to dominate the first half and battling defensive qualities in the second lead to a great 5-3 win.
William Crowther who had his best game of the season scored the first with a low shot after moving forward to receive a smart Aidan Prescott pass. Janusz Burzynski tapped in number two after a Jonathan Mumby free kick. Burzynski and Luther then both hit the bar before Burzynski scored the third again from close range after good play between Adam Bush and Liam Atkinson. Bush then hit the post as the first half ended in near total Welton domination.
The second half was very different with Sleaford using the wind and playing much better but Atkinson produced a fabulous thirty minutes of attacking midfield play and George Hunter again showed what a consistent performer he his making three saves despite very difficult conditions.
Atkinson made the score 4-0 with a brilliant solo run, beating three defenders and calmly slotting the ball past the keeper. Sleaford stormed back into the game with two goals but as tiredness set in for both teams Atkinson scored another great solo goal after another lovely run and cool finish.
Sleaford scored a late third after a corner but the final score was 3-5 and along with the home victory against Fishtoft this was the best result of the season. Atkinson for an inspired second half won the Man of the match award.
TEAM: Atkinson, Blair, Bush, Burzynski, Crowther, Hunter, Luther, Mumby, Peachey, Prescott.
GOALSCORER: Crowther, Burzynski (2), Atkinson (2)
MAN OF THE MATCH: Atkinson
Sunday 9th March: Fishtoft 3 - 0 Welton
On a bright but cold afternoon Welton made the long trip to Fishtoft for a top of the table clash that lived up to expectation. Both teams have been at the top of the table all season and with Sleaford are battling for third place. The home game between the two teams was very close with Welton just taking the points but with Tapi Shahwe in the line up today Fishtoft looked stronger in defence and ran out 3-0 winners.
The first half was very even with much quality football being played by both teams. The high standard of play reflecting the obvious effort put in by both managers on the training field and it was a pleasure to watch such a game of great excitement and passion unfold.
With Janusz Burzynski back to fitness and linking well with Liam Atkinson and Jonathan Mumby we started well and the game flowed from end to end. Atkinson had a fabulous long range drive tipped over the bar by the home keeper who rivals George Hunter as the top keeper in the league but the pace and skill of the Fishtoft front line kept the dependable Aidan Prescott and Robson Luther busy.
It was Fishtoft that got the vital opening goal after a long goal kick was passed forward and then driven past Hunter at the near post; they then produced the goal celebration of the season with a bowling routine that matched the football that preceded it. The first half finished 0-1 and the second half continued in the same fashion with much football to admire. Hunter made two great saves and at the other end Mumby had a fine header pushed on to the bar.
Fishtoft then increased their lead with a penalty, and as the boys began to tire the home team scored a third goal to seal victory.
Both games against Fishtoft have been brilliant this season with great effort from every boy and the Man of the Match award going on this occasion to every player.
TEAM: Atkinson, Blair, Bush, Burzynski, Crowther, Hunter, Luther, Mumby, Prescott.
MAN OF THE MATCH: The whole team.
Sunday 2nd March: Welton 1 - 4 East Coast
In the last home game of the season Welton welcomed East Coast to a dry but very windy Manor Park. The wind not for the first time this season played a big part in the game but Welton played as much good football as their illustrious opponents.
They have had a brilliant season, are unbeaten in the league and have some fantastic young footballers but albeit with the wind advantage in the first half Welton looked a good match and only strong defending from the away side kept the score at 1-1.
Welton scored first when Liam Atkinson hit a brilliant pass for Adam Bush who moved forward and shot low under the keeper. Strong play in midfield from Atkinson, Jonathan Mumby and Robson Luther kept Welton on the front foot and when East Coast did threaten Aidan Prescott , as he has done all season was calm and in control getting in many strong tackles and interceptions.
Mumby had a fantastic shot go just over the bar and Atkinson caused problems with his running and close control and it was Welton who looked the most likely team to score at this stage but East Coast have great resolve to go with the skill and confidence and they drew level with a penalty after a brilliant solo run resulted in a trip inside the box.
The first half ended 1-1 and in the second period the much expected onslaught didn’t quite materialise. They played much better and enjoyed the greater territorial advantage but they didn’t find the fluency that we witnessed when we travelled to Skegness in November. Some slack play at a goal kick let East Coast take the lead and the score became 1-3 with another neat low finish. The score became 1-4 after another penalty but the home team especially in the first half played very well and this performance will give the boys confidence and belief that they can compete with the best.
TEAM: Atkinson, Blair, Bush, Crowther, Hunter, Luther, Mumby, Peachey, Prescott.
GOALSCORER: Bush
MAN OF THE MATCH: Prescott
Sunday 24th February: Wyberton B 0 - 0 Welton
Welton travelled the long journey beyond Boston to play Wyberton B at the Causeway. Both teams battled hard and despite Welton having the better of the chances a 0-0 draw was a fair result. The very large pitch made the game a big challenge and both sides produced moments of excitement but the all important break through would not come.
The first half was even with Robson Luther and Aidan Prescott looking solid in defence giving George Hunter a quiet morning in goal, the midfield tried to make use of the space but the fluency of last week did not materialise.
Jack Blair had three powerful shots forcing the home keeper into action but the goal proved elusive. Adam Bush looked sharp again and his driving runs and all action style kept Wyberton on the back foot but their defence was strong and determined also.
The second half followed a similar pattern and the longer the game went on the more the home team pressed but 0-0 it finished.
On a day where energy was vital the team missed Chad Peachey and Janusz Burzynski who both enjoy the challenge that this sort of game demands.
TEAM: Atkinson, Blair, Bush, Crowther, Hunter, Luther, Mumby, Prescott.
MAN OF THE MATCH: Bush
Sunday 17th February: Rustons 1 - 4 Welton
On a bright but cold afternoon Welton played Rustons away and as the climax to the season approaches they complete their third win in a row. Manager Luther has this week during the half term holidays coached the team on three occasions and the result of these sessions was evident today.
Both teams played neat football in the early stages and the game ebbed and flowed with all the squad making a full contribution. The only black spot was an injury to Janusz Burzynski who was unable to play for more than five minutes.
Welton took the lead when Jonathan Mumby set Adam Bush away and after a brilliant surging run flying past defenders and a much practiced cross into the box Liam Atkinson scored at the back post .The second goal was a role reversal of the first with Atkinson making the run and Bush supplying the finish. The half time score was 2-0 with all parts of the team functioning well and this continued after the break.
Robson Luther whose personal performance was immense tackled strongly on the half way line to release Atkinson for the third goal; he ran forward with power and beat the keeper at his near post.
Rustons didn’t give in and pushed hard to get back into the match and forced George Hunter into making two good saves, one with his feet being really impressive but Welton continued to attack and after another Atkinson shot that the keeper could not hold the alert William Crowther blasted the ball home from close range for his second goal in two weeks.
As the game came to a close Rustons scored the last goal as they broke away after a Welton corner to make the final score 1-4.
Today’s result was pleasing and the passing and movement from all the boys proved the difference in the end but the Man of the match was undoubtedly Luther and his performance today was arguably the strongest of the season so far, playing in defence and in midfield his tackling, interceptions and all round strength was vital and set the platform for the others to play upon.
TEAM: Atkinson, Blair, Burzynski, Bush, Crowther, Hunter, Luther, Mumby, Peachey, Prescott,
GOALSCORER: Atkinson (2) Bush, Crowther.
MAN OF THE MATCH: Luther
Sunday 10th February: Caythorpe 0 - 3 Welton
On a beautiful spring like afternoon Welton played Caythorpe away but the picturesque surroundings failed to inspire the team and despite great effort the rhythm that the team found last week only appeared in rare moments and it took great finishing from Liam Atkinson and Adam Bush to secure the points.
The first half took a while to get going but the home keeper made good saves from Jonathan Mumby and Janusz Burzynski and as the half looked to be heading for 0-0
Liam Atkinson scored a fantastic goal, as the Caythorpe defence hesitated he drove the ball hard across the keeper and into the corner. Burzynski had caused problems for Caythorpe with his running and clever turns but chances were few and far between.
In the second half it took two typical Adam Bush finishes to give the score line a respectable look, the first another strong low drive after great play and an inviting cross from Atkinson and the second, his 23rd of the season with another low shot into the corner this time with another assist by Robson Luther.
TEAM: Atkinson, Blair, Burzynski, Bush, Crowther, Luther, Hunter, Mumby, Peachey, Prescott.
GOALSCORER: Atkinson, Bush (2)
MAN OF THE MATCH: Atkinson
Sunday 3rd February: Birchwood 1 - 5 Welton
On a very cold and windy morning Welton made the trip to Birchwood for a very entertaining match that finished 5-1 to the away side. Like the game last week the wind was a significant factor and provided the boys with a different challenge in the second half after a first half of near total domination. The difference this week was having the wind in their favour early on and building up a 3-0 lead that gave the boys the confidence to complete a good victory.
Janusz Burzynski opened the scoring after William Crowther won the ball in midfield and put through an excellent pass that our top scorer despatched with aplomb. The energetic Adam Bush who was the first half’s best player scored the second after he picked up a goal kick and blasted the ball high in the net. Jonathan Mumby playing centre forward for the first time forced the keeper into making a good save but Burzynski scored the third after Bush had chased down another goal kick and put him through.
The first half was over with the attacking players winning the plaudits but the second half was very different as Birchwood piled on the pressure and the strong wind became an issue. Robson Luther and Aidan Prescott in defence produced heroic performances and Welton were restricted to occasional break out’s. It was from one such break out and a defence splitting pass from Luther that Jack Blair smashed a powerful shot past the keeper for his first goal of the season. The introduction of Chad Peachey in midfield with his strength and robust approach helped stem the tide but Welton still had to defend well and George Hunter made an outstanding save before a goal mouth scramble with Crowther getting a touch made the score 5-0. Birchwood got a consolation goal with a looping shot after a corner.
Luther just beat Bush to the Man of the Match award and the team returned home with two hard earned points.
TEAM: Atkinson, Blair, Burzynski, Bush, Crowther, Hunter, Luther, Mumby, Peachey, Prescott.
GOALSCORER: Burzynski (2) Bush, Blair, Crowther.
MAN OF THE MATCH: Luther
Sunday 27th January: Welton 1 - 4 Greenbank
Welton played host to Greenbank on a windy day at Manor with the pitch heavy but playable. A very exciting match followed with a great number of chances for both teams but it was Greenbank who used the wind advantage better and took away the points. Both teams put in tremendous effort and the game was very competitive but always fair.
Greenbank took the lead early in the game with a low shot and George Hunter had to make four great saves to keep Welton in the match before Adam Bush and Robson Luther had good efforts for the home team but it was Greenbank who increased their lead with a fine low shot to make the score 2-0 at the break.
Welton started the second half with much of the territorial advantage and the wind now in their favour but despite this it was Greenbank who scored again with a tap in after Hunter had saved a free kick. Welton didn’t let their heads drop and continued to push hard for a route back into the match and Bush finished a powerful run with a brilliant low drive to make the score 1-3. The home team then enjoyed a spell of domination but the goals that the team play deserved would not follow. Jonathan Mumby had a free kick beat the stranded keeper and hit a brave defender in the face before bouncing to safety, Luther had a good shot go just wide and Jack Blair and Janusz Burzynski also had great efforts go close. Luther playing in robust fashion at this stage rallied the team but the Greenbank keeper played very well.
Greenbank then finished off a good afternoon for them with a break away goal to make the final score 1-4.
Hunter picked up the man of the match award for his great first half performance.
TEAM: Atkinson, Blair, Burzynski, Bush, Crowther, Hunter, Luther, Mumby, Peachey, Prescott.
GOALSCORER: Bush
MAN OF THE MATCH: Hunter
Sunday 20th January: Welton 4 - 2 St Helens
Welton played St Helens on a mild for mid January morning in a game that was switched from Manor Park after recent large amounts of rainfall. The pitch at Scampton is conducive to fast flowing, passing football and a close game followed that was not decided until the closing moments. St Helens last week beat Rustons 2-1 which put the away side in a positive frame of mind for a game with a team who are four places above them in the league.
The first half opened at fast pace with William Crowther and Liam Atkinson starting in midfield and linking impressively with Adam Bush and Janusz Burzynski further forward, it was however St Helens who opened the scoring from close range as for the first time in the match the defence looked in trouble. Despite the setback the team played with great spirit and Aidan Prescott looked in terrific form in defence making many needed interceptions and passing the ball forward intelligently when required. Bush came close with a powerful free kick before Welton equalised, Bush again involved rampaging into the box and when the ball broke to Burzynski he made no mistake from five yards. Atkinson was then unlucky not to score before George Hunter made a great save at the other end.
The score soon became 2-1 after a throw down the right and a brilliant curling finish from Burzynski gave the keeper no chance. Welton went 3-1 ahead after a massive kick from Hunter bounced through to Burzynski again who finished with his usual panache. Atkinson had two superb runs from midfield and was unlucky not to add to his goal tally.
St Helens always battle to the end and were contributors to a very good game and after good pressure at a corner the score became 3-2 and the game was more open than ever, the away side nearly equalised and the strength of Robson Luther was vital at this stage but as a win looked in doubt Burzynski made the game safe with his 22nd goal of the season.
Fantastic effort from every boy just getting Welton over the line and two hard earned points.
TEAM: Atkinson, Blair, Burzynski, Bush, Crowther, Hunter, Luther, Mumby, Peachey, Prescott,
GOALSCORER: Burzynski (4)
MAN OF THE MATCH: Prescott
Sunday 13th January: Wyberton A 5 - 3 Welton
Welton made the long journey to the Causeway at Wyberton for a tough fixture against the team in second place in the league. Both teams started the match playing good football but as the half progressed the home team became very dominant and took a deserved lead , a brilliant solo run and finish was the only goal of the first half and Welton needed George Hunter to make three other good saves to give the score line an air of respectability.
In the second half with the boys struggling to find form and shape the team failed to make an impact against a now rampant Wyberton attack. It was not until the score was 0-5 and the home team began to relax did the team sparkle into life and began a late fight back. The only Welton highlights came just before the end when Adam Bush scored a brilliant solo goal after a powerful run and this was quickly followed up by a Liam Atkinson tap in after a surge forward by Robson Luther. With moments left Bush smashed in a penalty after he was pushed in the box.
It was however all too little too late and very disappointing as we looked a shadow of the team that beat the same opposition 4-1 at the start of the season. It was only Hunter and Aidan Prescott who played near to their normal standard today.
TEAM: Atkinson, Burzynski, Bush, Crowther, Hunter, Luther, Mumby, Peachey, Prescott.
GOALSCORERS: Bush (2), Atkinson
MAN OF THE MATCH: Hunter
Sunday 6th January: Welton 7-1 Moorlands Railway
With the Christmas break over Welton play their first game of 2008 at home to Moorlands on a cold but bright morning. It was an open start to the game with chances for both teams but Welton carried the greater threat. Liam Atkinson and Janusz Burzynski had efforts go close but George Hunter had to be alert as Moorlands broke from midfield with promise.
The score remained 0-0 for most of the first half as Moorlands played with great determination but when Jonathan Mumby and Adam Bush joined the action the team played with greater purpose and two goals were scored before half time. Both goals were scored by Burzynski who was involved in everything, the first after he received a neat Mumby pass and moved powerfully through midfield before finishing in style and the second a clever push through the keeper’s legs.
Despite conceding a goal at the start of the half the team played much better in the second period. Moorlands made the score 2-1 after a strong run and great finish.
A tactical change saw Robson Luther move up front as the half progressed and he scored two goals, the first after a brilliant run by Bush down the left side and the second with a lovely finish after a clever through ball from Mumby. This was the last piece of action for Luther who suffered a back injury and had to leave the field but despite the loss of the inspirational captain the team continued to play well.
Burzynski scored the fifth goal after he won a battle with the last defender and beat the keeper from close range, the next goal came after a Burzynski corner was deflected in the net by an unlucky defender and number seven was scored by Burzynski again after an angled pass into the area by Jack Blair.
Burzynski has now scored 18 goals this season and won a deserved Man of the match award; he scores many different types of goals and has looked lethal against Moorlands this season scoring nine in two matches.
TEAM: Atkinson, Blair, Burzynski, Bush, Crowther, Hunter, Luther, Mumby, Peachey, Prescott,
GOALSCORERS: Burzynski (4), Luther (2), OG
MAN OF THE MATCH: Burzynski
Sunday 16th December Welton 5 - 1 Lowlands
In the last game before the Christmas break Welton beat a spirited Lowlands team 5-1 at Manor Park. The holiday period comes at the right time after a number of inconsistent performances and results but the team sit in third place after their ninth win in thirteen games.
The first goal of the day was scored by Janusz Burzynski as he turned in a Liam Atkinson corner but Lowlands equalised after a loose clearance with a low shot into the corner that George Hunter could do nothing about. The half time score was 1-1 and it had been an open half but Robson Luther and Aidan Prescott looked very comfortable at the back.
In the second half the team played better and with more rhythm scoring a further four goals, the first was turned in by a defender after a great right wing surge by the impressive Atkinson. The third goal soon followed as Adam Bush showed great determination and his usual cool head in front of goal. It was Bush that was tripped as Jonathan Mumby scored from the penalty spot and the final goal came from Luther who was back to full strength after his illness last week.
Atkinson picked up a deserved man of the match award and was a constant threat in midfield.
The challenge now in the New Year will be to stay in third place and this will require great determination and a strong desire from every player to improve as the standard each week of every team continues to get better.
TEAM: Atkinson, Blair, Burzynski, Bush, Crowther, Hunter, Luther, Mumby, Peachey, Prescott.
GOALSCORERS: Burzynski, OG, Bush, Mumby, Luther.
MAN OF THE MATCH: Atkinson
Sunday 9th December: Greenbank 5 - 3 Welton
A week is a long time in football. After two great results last weekend a really disappointing performance not helped by a number of boys feeling unwell resulted in a 3-5 defeat away at Greenbank. With captain Robson Luther poorly and unable to play a significant role and with three other boys recovering from sickness bugs the team produced their weakest performance of the season.
The predicted bad weather did not materialise and in the early stages of the game lots of space was available and it seemed we would carry on from where we left off last weekend but with energy levels low and many players off form it was Greenbank who took the advantage and scored two goals, the first from close range and the second a penalty.
Jonathan Mumby made the score 1-2 with a free kick after a back pass was picked up by the home keeper. George Hunter made a good save soon after and Liam Atkinson had a good shot go close but 1-2 was the half time score.
In the second half Greenbank made the score 1-3 with a shot that went over Hunter and despite Janusz Burzynski making the score 2-3 with a crisp low shot after a long Hunter clearance it was Greenbank who continued to fight harder and the score became 2-4 when a corner went in at the near post. The final nail in the coffin came when Greenbank scored a fifth with a fantastic free kick.
The only real highlight of the day came as the match came to a close and Atkinson scored a fabulous solo goal beating two defenders and smashing a high shot passed the keeper for a final score of 3-5.
TEAM: Atkinson, Blair, Burzynski, Bush, Crowther, Hunter, Luther, Mumby, Peachey, Prescott,
GOALSCORER: Mumby, Burzynski, Atkinson

Sunday 2nd December: Welton 6 - 2 Birchwood
In the second game of the weekend Welton played Birchwood at home on a day with changing weather conditions. Over the sixty minutes we had heavy rain and by the end of the game bright sunshine. The conditions however did not prevent Welton from achieving a second victory in a game that was very different from the intense battle against Fishtoft yesterday.
Adam Bush provided the highlights in the first half with his powerful running and sharp finishing; his first goal came after a solo run down the left and a curling shot over the keeper and his second with a powerful snapshot that raced off the surface and into the net. William Crowther and Chad Peachey found space easy to find in midfield and this was in sharp contrast to the previous four matches where all our midfield players have struggled to make the impact that we know they are capable of doing.
The score at the break was 2-0 and in the second half the team played even better and scored a further four goals, it was however Birchwood who scored next after good passing and a shot that George Hunter could not hold and the ball was driven in from close range.
The reply was instant and after a great Crowther pass Bush scored his third. Peachey, Bush again and Liam Atkinson had further chances before Bush scored his fourth and the teams fourth after a long Aidan Prescott pass and neat play from Atkinson. Bush had proved a constant threat and took his season’s goal tally to 16.
The score became 4-2 when the wet conditions played a part and Birchwood bundled the ball over the line. At this stage though the boys were dominating midfield and Atkinson scored after good play by Peachey. The final goal came after a Jonathan Mumby shot was pushed out by the keeper and Peachey tapped in for his first goal of the season.
Peachey has played brilliantly this weekend in both games and Bush and Prescott were also in great form today.
TEAM: Atkinson, Blair, Burzynski, Bush, Crowther, Hunter, Luther, Mumby, Peachey, Prescott.
GOALSCORERS: Bush (4), Atkinson, Peachey
MAN OF THE MATCH: Peachey
Saturday 1st December: Welton 2 - 0 Fishtoft
In the first game of a weekend double header Welton played Fishtoft at Manor Park in a blood and thunder encounter that resulted in a 2-0 home win. It was a very close game with two strong teams and the result could have gone either way but massive effort from every player just edged Welton over the line and a first victory in four matches.
Fishtoft have many fine players, are well managed and have passionate support which makes this fixture one of the season’s highlights. The nature of the game and the last three disappointing performances provided the motivation for a determined group of players and in a game that needed character Robson Luther and Chad Peachey provided plenty of that and with Aidan Prescott and George Hunter supporting the foundation was in place to build upon. It was not a game for the faint hearted and Liam Atkinson and Jonathan Mumby in midfield had little time and space to create chances for others and it was Fishtoft who opened the game the stronger. Janusz Burzynski had a shot drift wide but Hunter was the busier of the two keepers.
It was always going to be close and the games defining moment came when the ball broke loose just outside the area to Mumby who despite the attentions of two defenders closing in shot powerfully into the corner to give Welton the lead. It was his 11th goal of the campaign and makes him the highest scoring midfield player in the league so far this year.
The game was very even from this point and chances came at both ends. Adam Bush had two good efforts and Peachey drove wide when in a good position. As the game came to a close and the tension on the touchline seemed to increase Burzynski made the game safe after a brilliant long ball from Luther was smartly driven wide of the keeper. 2-0 against Fishtoft who we have never beaten before is probably our best result of the season so far.
TEAM: Atkinson, Burzynski, Bush, Crowther, Hunter, Luther, Mumby, Peachey, Prescott,
GOALSCORERS: Mumby, Burzynski
MAN OF THE MATCH: Luther
Sunday 18th November: East Coast 5 - 0 Welton
East Coast away is the toughest fixture of the season and the experience of last year’s heavy defeat brought the boys to Skegness in determined mood but with also an air of realism and the hope that we could return to playing with the confidence that saw the team build up a six match winning run. The journey from Lincoln began in heavy rain but at the coast the weather was dry but very cold.
Despite great effort and the team playing much better than last week the home team ran out 5-0 winners. East Coast are very well organised with a very talented squad and play football to a standard rarely seen at this level. Their captain was the game’s outstanding player and he proved an unsurpassable mountain in defence.
Out of the five goals three were brilliant giving George Hunter no chance, number four was arguably the best goal scored against Welton in the 14 months that the team has been together. The only bright spots were the form of Hunter again and Liam Atkinson who is showing signs of settling well into the team. Welton’s best chance came when Janusz Burzynski turned and hit a brilliant curling shot that was turned around the post.
It was, however, a long trip back for the second year in succession.
TEAM: Atkinson, Burzynski, Bush, Crowther, Hunter, Luther, Mumby, Peachey, Prescott,
MAN OF THE MATCH: Atkinson.
Sunday 11th November: Welton 2-3 Sleaford
On a cold November morning Welton played Sleaford at Manor Park and suffered the first defeat of the season. The final score however did not reflect the visitor’s domination and the result could have been very different had it not been for George Hunter in goal who produced a heroic performance. The final score could have been 3-6 on a day when we didn’t produce the needed fighting spirit until Sleaford had scored three goals. Sleaford play with three in defence and three forward and this formation proved a step too far as we failed to carve out our usual number of chances.
Sleaford took an early lead after a weak clearance with a neat low shot and they doubled their lead soon after when a corner went straight in the net as their skill and work rate put Welton on the back foot.
Just when we needed a boost Janusz Burzynski pulled a goal back when a determined run resulted in a penalty that he put away with style for 1-2. The next goal was always going to be important and from another corner a brilliant header made the half time score 1-3. Just before the break Welton’s best piece of play all game resulted in Liam Atkinson hitting the post.
In the second half we were competing better but Sleaford continued to make the better chances and Hunter showed everyone what a strong all round keeper he has now become making five great saves. Welton continued to fight and Adam Bush scored a second goal also straight from a corner but this all came too late and Sleaford completed a deserved victory.
TEAM: Atkinson, Blair, Bush, Burzynski, Crowther, Hunter, Luther, Mumby, Peachey, Prescott.

MAN OF THE MATCH: Hunter
Sunday 28th October: Welton 4 - 4 Louth Old Boys
On a damp Sunday morning Welton entertained Louth at Manor Park.
Arguably our most exciting game of the season followed as both teams fought out
a dramatic 4-4 draw. Louth after a fantastic performance and unbelievable work rate were only denied a victory by a last minute Jonathan Mumby free kick that brought great cheers of relief from the home support.
It was certainly a game of high energy action but for any football purists watching it was short of quality passing and skills.
Louth scored the first two goals and this helped the away team build up momentum and Welton had to show great character to maintain the unbeaten start to the season.
The first goal came as Welton held a high defensive line and the forward rounded George Hunter in impressive fashion, the second goal came from a powerful free kick that crept inside the post.
At this point Welton struggled in defensive positions both at the back and in midfield but a great short corner routine between Adam Bush and Janusz Burzynski resulted in a brilliant curling shot from Burzynski that got Welton back in the game.
At this stage the game was very open with Welton pushing hard for an equaliser, both Bush and Burzynski came close but Hunter made two good saves at the other end.
In this crucial period it was only Robson Luther who seemed up for the battle and Louth scored again after hesitation at a corner made the half time score 1-3.
In the second half despite two good corners by Liam Atkinson to put Louth under pressure Welton failed to get a grip of the game in midfield and Hunter was again called upon to make two great stops and just when we needed inspiration Bush hit a shot that the Louth keeper could not hold and Welton had a lifeline at 2-3.
Bush at this time produced a period of determined attacking play and a driving surge into the box resulted in a penalty that Mumby dispatched for 3-3.
As the game progressed Hunter was again needed to make two brilliant saves and a block sliding tackle in with his feet was equal to any of his great saves this season.
Just when it seemed we were creating chances Louth scored again as we failed to deal with a corner for the second time in the game.
There was however a final twist, when it seemed our first defeat was inevitable Bush was tripped outside the box with a minute remaining. Mumby stepped forward to curl the ball up and over the wall to make the final score 4-4.
The whole game was played at fantastic pace and Louth were unlucky not to take maximum points and it needed a stunning free kick and top performances from Hunter and Luther to keep the now 7 match unbeaten run going.

Sunday 21st October: Moorlands Railway 1 - 13 Welton
After no match last weekend Welton travelled the short distance to Moorlands Railway full of energy and produced a performance of passion and commitment. Despite only having seven players available on the day the strength and fitness of every player showed and by the end of the second half the game was comfortable and the winning run extended to six matches.
Janusz Burzynski was on top form and scored five goals taking his total for the season to nine and Liam Atkinson making his debut in midfield was outstanding, his passing ability and football brain will be an asset to the team in the weeks ahead.
Moorlands started strongly and took the lead with a low shot going under George Hunter , Jonathan Mumby equalised from close range before Burzynski made the score 2-1 after a penalty box scramble. Adam Bush scored the third after good passing between Atkinson and Mumby and Mumby made the half time score 4-1 after a run down the left wing and low shot.
In the second half Atkinson scored his first goal for Welton with a powerful right foot drive after Bush had chased down a goal kick. Burzynski then scored a great sixth with a long range left foot shot; he then added another after an Atkinson corner. Goal number eight came from Robson Luther who had now changed positions with Mumby and struck a great shot from distance. The ninth goal was scored by Atkinson who pushed the ball home neatly with the outside of his foot. Burzynski scored number ten after a long kick by Hunter bounced through to him on the edge of the box and he made no mistake from close range.
Bush scored the next goal after a strong Atkinson run and Burzynski the penultimate one with another typical power strike with his left foot. Bush made the final score 13-1 when he shot home after Mumby put him through.
A strong performance from everyone with Burzynski winning the man of the match award but in the early stages Luther’s strength and Chad Peachey’s tackling provided the foundation for the attacking players to flourish.

Sunday 7th October: Welton 5 - 1 Caythorpe
Welton played their fifth match of the season against Caythorpe at home and despite a spirited effort from the visitors completed a good 5-1 win with a strong team performance. The match started with Welton on the attack and this was the pattern for much of the first period with many good passages of play and good passing movement.
Robson Luther scored the first goal when he turned in a low Adam Bush corner but Caythorpe had a chance to equalise when a shot flashed wide of George Hunter in goal. The score became 2-0 when Jonathan Mumby crossed from the left for Janusz Burzynski but the ball was turned in by the Caythorpe defender. The half time score was 2-0 and the team had played with great control and discipline rather than imagination. Luther had controlled the midfield and Aidan Prescott and Jack Blair did enough to keep the Caythorpe attack in check. Prescott and Hunter in goal are now producing performances of great consistency that provide a solid backbone for the team that allows the front players to express themselves and create chances. Blair played well today with Prescott in defence and deserved his man of the match award.
The second half was slightly more disjointed as the heat began to take its toll. Hunter made two good saves and a third one with his feet was particularly good. The third goal came when a Bush cross was headed in his own net by a defender.
The fourth followed soon after when a great run by Bush and turn inside the defender was followed by a neat low shot giving the keeper no chance. Hunter gets an assist for goal number five when he produced a massive kick that was allowed to bounce through to Burzynski, who in typical style hit the ball low into the net for his fourth goal of the season.
Caythorpe scored the final goal, which their effort deserved, to make the final score 5-1.
A steady rather than spectacular performance but a well earned win.

Sunday 30th September: St Helens 0 - 3 Welton
As the league table begins to take shape Welton play their first away fixture of the season at St Helens. On a bright autumn morning Welton looked to consolidate their position with the leaders but it was the home team that started the stronger side, passing the ball neatly to put Aidan Prescott and Chad Peachey under early pressure.
St Helens won the early battle to control the midfield but in defence we stood firm and as we gradually got a grip of the game Adam Bush up front began to cause problems for the home defence. Bush had trained brilliantly earlier in the week and was a constant threat with his direct running and determination.
Welton’s first good chance came when Bush powered a high shot just wide, this set the pattern for the rest of the half and with the introduction of Janusz Burzynski the team played better and started to create chances.
The score became 1-0 when Bush chased a lost cause wide on the left and after keeping the ball in play crossed towards the back post where Burzynski closed in on the defender who knocked the ball into his own net. Robson Luther and William Crowther then began to dominate midfield and Bush was unlucky on two further chances. Luther himself had a great run and shot.
The score then became 2-0 soon after when a Bush corner via a slight deflection beat the home keeper at the near post. That was the score at the break and the second half followed a similar pattern with Luther playing brilliantly putting in many important challenges and this set the tone for the remainder of the match. Prescott also played well all game with many tackles and interceptions and he also produced a series of clever runs carrying the ball forward to make chances for others.
Jonathan Mumby made the final score 3-0 when Jack Blair played a lovely high pass from the left that Mumby controlled and slotted home to complete a good win.
A good performance against a team that last season we beat narrowly home and away.

Sunday 16th September: Welton 5 - 3 Wyberton B
On match day three Welton entertained Wyberton B on a sunny September morning and despite having numerous chances failed to play with the rhythm we have seen in the first two games. A strong wind made the ball difficult to control and this provided an extra challenge for both teams.
Early in the game Welton took the lead when Adam Bush scored his fifth goal of the season by curling a corner straight into the net. Wyberton equalised with a well taken penalty before Jonathan Mumby drove the ball home to give Welton the advantage again.
The score became 3-1 when Mumby’s free kick beat the wall and keeper. Another Mumby free kick bounced back off the bar before Wyberton made the score 3-2 with a good turn and shot.
The later stages of the first period were Welton’s best with Chad Peachey and Aidan Prescott looking comfortable in defence for the third game in a row. .Janusz Burzynski showed great endeavour linking midfield with attack and Bush always looked a threat despite not always getting the run of the ball.
Mumby made the half time score 4-2 with a right foot shot that just beat the keeper.
In the second half great effort from Wyberton and the strong wind proved a major challenge but Robson Luther and Jack Blair battled hard as Welton found space difficult to find.
As Wyberton used the back wind, George Hunter made two brilliant saves and as the game ebbed and flowed Burzynski, Luther and Bush had good chances for Welton.
Luther took over free kick duties to drive the ball high over the wall from a long way out to make the score 5-2 but Wyberton scored the final goal, another great free kick that gave Hunter no chance.
The team failed to produce top form but another home win makes it three out of three and Welton sit top of the league on goal difference.

Sunday 9th September: Welton 7 - 2 Ruston’s
Welton’s second game of the season was a classic game of two halves with the first period being very tight but a much improved performance in the second period resulted in a comfortable win.
In similar fashion to last week, loose marking in midfield allowed Rustons to open the scoring . George Hunter was given no chance with a long range shot. Janusz Burzynski provided our only threat but we failed to give him the needed support in the early stages.
Robson Luther and William Crowther had fine shots go just wide but it was the introduction of Adam Bush that made a difference to the team play and it was only when Luther, playing with great determination in midfield, powered a shot high in the net did we play with the confidence that we showed last weekend during our opening fixture.
At half time 1-1 was a fair reflection of the first half. In the early stages of the second half we took full control of the game and scored three quick goals. From the kick off good passes between Bush, Burzynski and Jonathan Mumby resulted in Burzynski tapping in from close range.
Burzynski made it 3-1 with a brilliant finish from a high through pass by Jack Blair.
Bush then made the score 4-1 after a quick corner between Mumby and Burzynski., Moments later the game was effectively over when Bush made the score 5-1 with a fantastic long range strike that went high into the top corner.
Crowther and Luther had further chances before Luther scored his second with a strong low shot from the left side of the area. Ruston’s, despite the score battled on and pulled a goal back with a smart finish at the near post that took a small deflection.
Burzynski finished off a good afternoon with his third goal, a clever chip over the keeper.

Sunday 2nd September 2007: Welton 4 - 1 Wyberton A
The new season began on a windy morning at Manor Park with a home game against Wyberton A.
After a positive pre season with four wins and one defeat we started the new campaign with confidence and Wyberton provided tough opposition for our opening fixture in competitive football.
The match started at fast pace with good football from both teams and Wyberton took the lead with an accurate low shot after a corner. This lead lasted only a few minutes as Welton equalised when Jonathan Mumby headed home a Janusz Burzynski corner.
The rest of the first half was very even with both sides playing progressive football. A great passing move between Adam Bush and Mumby resulted in Burzynski bringing a good save from the keeper. George Hunter continued his excellent form from last season and made a smart save to keep the score level at the break.
Welton started the second half strongly and used the wind to keep Wyberton on the back foot. Mumby scored his second goal when the Wyberton keeper failed to deal with a long ball from the back.
As Wyberton tired, Bush scored two more goals, his first after a Mumby through ball and his second with a bouncing shot that just cleared the keeper’s hands.
Further chances followed when Mumby hit the bar with another header and Hunter made a brilliant penalty save as Wyberton pushed hard to get back into the game.
Chad Peachey and Aidan Prescott played very well in defence always in the right place and in the second half when everyone began to tire Robson Luther’s work rate and tackling became an important factor.
